All About Colleyville, Texas

Colleyville is a prosperous suburb and city of Fort Worth and Dallas located in Tarrant County's northeast. The city is situated in the suburban region's Mid-Cities between Fort Worth and Dallas and is approximately 5.6 km (3.5 miles) west of DFW International Airport. Colleyville's population was 26,057 at the 2020 census. The city is known for its wealth, rural atmosphere, public safety, and public schools.

Colleyville masters the formula for merging luxurious urban evolution while preserving an authentic rural atmosphere. The city started a remarkable transformation in 1956 yet it developed from a town without a sanitary sewer system to a prominent suburb in D-FW in less than 70 years.

Tarrant County is a region abundant in resources. It prides four natural zones from west to east. The part now known as Colleyville contained lush prairie fields before settlement which later produced an ample amount of crops for the area's settlers. Out of the most notable natural resources in the city are the two creeks, Little Bear Creek and Big Bear Creek, that surround the community and provide the necessary support for the early settlers. Despite the lack of documented evidence that Colleyville and its surrounding area were inhabited permanently by American Indians, it was recognized as a common migratory course for Wichita, Kiowa, and Comanche tribes. At present, the city maintains 46 acres of land in the vicinity of Colleyville Nature Center where locals and visitors can enjoy the community and the surroundings at their most organic.

In 2020, residents of Colleyville can enjoy luxury living, high-end grocery stores, and fine dining within the city. Just from this easy accessibility, it is difficult to imagine that the town was packed with rural fields which only includes a few shopping options and public amenities two generations before. Colleyville's location is attractive due to its proximity to the neighboring cities and the D-FW International Airport, however, this reason was not always the case. Until 1973, the airport was still not open and the main intention of Colleyville to incorporate was to evade municipal taxes payment. The pioneer communities that formed the city retained their independent, strong identities and were unaffected by the huge change. For over a decade, the city government stayed small and strict zoning ordinances were implemented to maintain the city's rural quality. Colleyville, by 1969, had no water systems owned by the municipality, no ad valorem taxes, poor road conditions, no sanitary sewer system, no city hall building, and no garbage pickup as stated by Colleyville: Then and Now.

The early 1970s drove the change in fortifying the role of the local government regarding community building and by 1979 Colleyville's residents started to demand more. Locals wanted to have smaller lots that can draw new residents and more amenities like a library according to a community appraisal conducted by the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1980, this sentiment gave Colleyville hope to grow as "the Highland Park of Tarrant County". Tara Plantation was the first planned unit development and the initial step of the city to attract wealthy homeowners.

Jumping into the 21st century, the city has not only met the1979's stated expectations but has also surpassed them. A library and the City Hall opened in 2003 and locals now have the alternatives of acquiring townhouses next to those facilities. Moreover, Colleyville holds many recognitions such as being the 4th safest city in Texas and the state's highest percentage of college graduates. Since the 1980s, the city has undergone tremendous changes in both population and wealth. Colleyville sustains to invest in the city's community to keep an intimate rural feel in an urban space regardless of its reputation as an affluent and prosperous city.
